A phone, landline phone or cell phone, sometimes shortened to just phone or cell, is a small portable phone that will make and receive calls on a radio signal network while the user is traveling within a phone service area. Some phones are considered global phones which work with networks in other countries while others work more like traditional home phones. The traditional landline or cell phone has the features of a standard telephone as well as some additional capabilities such as voice mail, caller ID, and some even have video calling capabilities. There are three main components to a typical cell phones or landline phone system. The three components are communication systems the transmission of signals and information, circuits which handle communications, and key systems which allow the system to recognize call events. The third component is the hardware which allows phones to connect to the network and also act as a backup for the network in case of a major catastrophe such as a power failure.

There are two primary types of cellular coverage and they are CDMA and GSM. CDMA phones work by receiving a signal and then repeating it back to the carrier. GSM cellular coverage works by using a series of cells linked together using radio waves and transmit the signal in one direction. This is why many people choose GSM cellular coverage for their smartphones. CDMA phones on the other hand use a series of cells linked in a logical pattern and are not able to transmit signals in only one direction.
